So I've been giving thoughts to the idea of "toys for boys and girls" for a few weeks ago. Today I picked up the Transformer Airachnid and something struck me then. Ever notice that toy action figures of females always have them come with bows or staffs or some kind of close arms combat thing, or if they came with a firearm, it was always like a small pistol or something "their delicate hands can handle". Never bazookas or machine guns or whatever? I get it for toys "meant for girls" like My Little Pony (sorry Bronies) isn't going to have Fluttershy come with Anthrax Grenade Launchers. (Though that WOULD be awesome!) But like even G.I.Joe does this too. Lady Jaye came with a javelin launcher, Scarlett with a crossbow, Jinx had swords and a staff, Zarana had some saw blade thingie, Cover Girl didn't even COME with a weapon. And these women are military! The Baroness came with a rifle, but you know... She's a terrorist. When they do come with actual firearms, it's usually pistols or something small, but never anything impressive, like something you'd see Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell hauling around. (Which sadly, GitS isn't a toy, because it would have been a freakin' amazing toy line.)

Even Transformers weren't immune to this. If they came with weapons at all, they were usually one of the above types. (crossbows, spears, bladed weapons, ect.) Blackarachnia came with crossbows and blades (or projectiles that looked like crossbows) and the same goes for Arcee... With the one exception of the recent Prime toy who came with a giant ass cannon. But that's one out of several toys of her. (Seriously, they're alien robots that can traverse the galaxy, and they're still using crossbows?) Override had a double barreled blaster, but she was originally a "he" in Japan. Thunderblast had a missile launcher, and Strika that, while she comes with a set of shoulder cannons... Once again... They're evil bad girls.

Same for Superheroes. The warrior women, Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl gets a sword, lasso and/or mace, while peaceful Superman, who's more powerful than any weapon, gets an atmosphere destroying missile launcher. I've lost track of how many Batmans, who HATES firearms, came with some type of projectile weapon. Harley Quinn gets a comically giant ass gun, but we all know there's just a flag in there that says bang. (And then shoots the flag like an arrow. Another goddamned arrow launcher.) Poison Ivy got a crossbow too. (Though she had one in the show, so I'll let that slide.) Teela and Cheetara got staffs, while Man-At-Arms and Panthro gets to drive around in tanks and shoot heavy blasters. Black Widow gets wrist stingers and a pair of .45s as opposed to something more powerful. (Unlike the Punisher, who gets an entire arsenal.) Jill Valentine, fighting zombies, usually gets some sort of small sub-machine gun and knife. All the Princess Leia toys came with some tiny ass blaster, with exception of the Slave Leia one, where she came with some giant ass Skiff Guard staff. (ANOTHER staff.) April O'Neil get's a camera. Hell, Venus the Ninja Turtle didn't even get a sword or staff. She got a fucking fan.

It's understandable if it's a universe like Xena or Zelda where more powerful weaponry isn't the norm. But this is kinda silly. So what? Girls don't like to see shit blow shit up like guys do?

Yeah... I know way too many of you to know that ain't true.

I can see where you're getting at but at the same time like some said there have been instances where some characters do carry guns. Perhaps one day it'll change.

My gripe however is that there's not a lot of female characters made for many of the TF lines. I mean yes I know it's a boys toyline but at the same time you see many other female characters in other toylines like in Marvel and DC for example so what's Hasbro's excuse?

They really should consider making more fembot molds. There are a lot of G1 fembots that have yet to be made into figures and it's about time these ladies get some sort of updates.

I know it's a boy's toy, but there's a lot of female Transformers fans. It might not hurt to have a few more fembots in there. Well, I always felt that if you wanted to promote something as meant for both boys and girls, then in the advertisements, show both boys and girls playing with it. Right now, I can see not putting out a Titan Class Elita-1 toy, but start now by introducing more and more females into it. (Aside from another damn motorcycle!)

Personally I'd love another Override toy.

Exactly! I mean make some femmes cars, trucks, jets, even as tanks if they're creative enough. As much as I love some as motorcycles some veriaty is needed too. Like have some robot modes look like supermodels with others looking less female like, thin, short and child like, etc.

Like you said Transformers is a brand that does appeal to both boys and girls of all ages so why not put out toys of female characters that the female fans can relate to as well? After all they have male fans too so that helps too. I'm hoping that the Arcee figures in the TFP line is that start of having more female Transformers be more important in both the future shows and toylines.

I wish GitS had a toy line. That would be so frickin' awesome. Anyway, Tali from Mass Effect comes with a shotgun, because she's bad-ass like that. ;)

And, yeah, my wife likes seeing stuff explode, too. She'd want the rocket launcher. Which would be good for her, 'cause her aim's not that good. XD

Very interesting observation. I think that it probably has to do with the prevailing gun culture. Guns are used as a symbol of manhood and masculinity. The prevailing, deep-seated cultural prejudice of women as weak and frail would de-power this symbol by association.
Or, in other words: Most guys don't want women to have a bigger dick to swing around.

Kind of off the topic of weapons, but I bought a Typhoid Mary figure several years ago skmply because she came with a straight jacket. Thats just awesomeness right there.

Lady Jayes Retaliation figure, while it is only a Renegades scarlett repaint, comes packing some serious heat. Including that javelin, there are two machine guns and Zaps bazooka with backpack.

You go girl!

Along similar lines.. why are the female transformers figures so rare? You get a hundred thousand variants of everyone else (especially bumblebee.) But one, ever variant of the female robots.. and even then.. they are hard to find on shelves. Wheres my "Night-something arcee"? Or non-show character repaint of arcee? Even wheeljack got a repaint of a non-show character in his mold!

Arcee got a repaint into Flamewar. Yeah, it was the Legion class toy, but the Cyberverse guys are the only ones I seem to be able to buy these days. (And granted, I'm kinda annoyed that Legion Wheeljack and Bumblebee wasn't repainted into Dead End and Hot Shot.) But I know what you're saying. I think it's got something to do with how the female characters are usually so... Defined and rare as that particular character, that almost any repaint of them will end up looking like a different deco for the originally intended character. Flamewar doesn't look all that different from Arcee, and they even had to make up some story about how she tries to look like her and stuff.

I know, It's a weak reasoning. But I think it's what they're thinking.
